Heat Pumps

23/07/2026

Heat Pumps are a superior form of central heating. Unlike Oil, Gas, Coal and Timber products Heat Pumps provide a clean form of heating. They help in climate change reduction, cleaner air in the surrounding area and cleaner air in the home. Room temperatures are maintained at a consistent, comfortable level throughout the day. And they cost less to run.

If you have a water based central heating a new Heat Pump installation may use much of the exiting piping and radiators. However in some cases radiators may have to be replaced.

If there isn't a water based central heating in the house then Air to Air systems may be the best option. These use wall mounted cassettes to pump warm air into the room. Air to Air systems are more efficient than Air to Water, typically about half the running costs of oil or gas. They are easier and less expensive to install than Air to Water also.

The house must have a BER of B or better to get the best out of a heat pump. Upfront costs of heat pumps are high but there are significant grants available from SEAI for Heat Pumps.  If a Heat Pump is combined with a well designed Solar Panel system and the correct Electricity Price Contract the savings are significantly improved.
